Abacus Bathing Adam Ferry delivering CPD seminar
The OT Service’s Adam Ferry delivering a CPD seminar on Abacus’ stand

Aiming to engage occupational therapists, Abacus Specialist Bathroom Solutions is working with OTs Kate Sheehan and Adam Ferry to present a raft of brand new CPD-accredited educational seminars relating to topics not always associated with assisted bathing.

Both experienced OTs from The OT Service who deliver the bathroom supplier’s ‘Lunch and Learn’ CPD training programme nationwide, Kate and Adam will give three seminars over the two days of the event.

Taking place in the Innovation Theatre, Kate Sheehan will deliver Abacus’ ‘Bathing and Sleep – joining the dots’ seminar which will consider the occupation of bathing with a particular focus on how bathing can support sleep and positive routines.

With bathing assessment often becoming focused on the process of physical transfers relating to getting in and out of the bath, the new seminar will instead discuss the impact on children, their parents, as well as carers regarding sleep.

According to Abacus, delegates will leave the seminar with a greater appreciation of the link between bathing and sleep, consideration of the impact of a positive bedtime routine on clients and their carers, along with a greater understanding of equipment available to support bathing as a meaningful occupation.

On Abacus’ stand, Adam Ferry will present the company’s ‘Posture and Bathing – are you thinking straight?’ seminar, examining issues of bathing posture with facilitated discussion around how safe and effective bathing can be supported for those clients with postural needs.

The company says delegates attending the new seminar will develop an understanding of the issues with posture when bathing, gain more knowledge in relation to the equipment that enables clients with postural needs to bathe, as well as reflect on bathing as a meaningful occupation.

Also taking place on the Abacus stand, Adam will present the new ‘Using bathing to support family roles’ CPD seminar, considering the theory behind the use of bathing to support development through the use of play whilst reinforcing both parenting, carer and children’s roles.

With bathing often being part of a daily or bedtime routine for families with young children, Abacus says the key learning outcomes from the seminar will include an appreciation of current legislation that supports bathing and access to play.

In addition, delegates will reflect on their own experiences of bath time either as a child or with our children in order to consider its impact on development, as well as develop an understanding of current barriers to bathing and how they can be broken.

The OT Show will take place on the 27th and 28th November 2019 at the NEC.
