Power assist addition to Permobil portfolio

Permobil announced the acquisition of MAX Mobility in December 2017, further expanding the company’s wheelchair offerings with a motorised power assist solution.

Power assist provides an alternative solution for manual wheelchair users to maintain their independence and reduce the risks of repetitive strain injuries associated with wheelchair propulsion.

Max Mobility manufactures the SmartDrive MX2+ with PushTracker, a revolutionary power assist device that works on virtually any manual wheelchair on the market according to Permobil.

Max Mobility is headquartered in Nashville, USA and is the creation of entrepreneur Mark Richter, Ph.D., and CEO of MAXMobility, who was interested in finding a solution for the challenges wheelchair users who self-propel face, such as shoulder injuries from years of propulsion.

"Almost three out of four manual wheelchair users have shoulder pain already," commented Mark.

"By becoming part of Permobil and adding power assist to the portfolio we can expand our reach and reduce shoulder pain for users globally. I am personally excited to join Permobil as the Senior Group Innovation Advisor working across the Power, Manual and Seating and Positioning portfolios."

The SmartDrive easily attaches to manual chairs, simply attaching to the back of a user;s chair and is ideal for users with limited strength. With a built-in battery providing miles on a single charge and weighing 12 pounds, the SmartDrive is described as one of the most lightweight and portable power assists on the market.

"We are excited to welcome MAX Mobility to the Permobil family," says Larry Jackson, President of Permobil Business Region Americas. "The addition of power assist technology to our portfolio greatly expands our offering and will provide an independent mobility solution for our users globally."
