University of Texas at Dallas researchers are recruiting patients for a new study aimed at determining a connection between hearing deficits and the likelihood of falls. The research project, a collaboration between The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) and UNT Health Science Center in Fort Worth, is evaluating how much hearing aids and other technologies might improve balance and prevent falls for people with auditory problems. One-third of older adults fall each year, according to recent national studies. The resulting injuries can be life-threatening.

Ottobock, Official Technical Service provider for the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, has confirmed 30 orthopaedic technicians from across 11 countries, including three from the United Kingdom, will form the technical service team for the Games. Brain-imaging tool identifies signs of cognitive decline

UCLA researchers have used a brain-imaging tool and stroke risk assessment to identify signs of cognitive decline early on in individuals who don't yet show symptoms of dementia. The connection between stroke risk and cognitive decline has been well established by previous research. Individuals with higher stroke risk, as measured by factors like high blood pressure, have traditionally performed worse on tests of memory, attention and abstract reasoning.
