Professor Gil Weinberg has already built a band of robotic musicians in his Georgia Tech lab. Now he’s created a robot that can be attached to amputees, allowing its technology to be embedded into humans. The robotic drumming prosthesis has motors that power two drumsticks. The first stick is controlled both physically by the musicians’ arms and electronically using electromyography (EMG) muscle sensors. The other stick "listens” to the music being played and improvises.

Following the successful first ever fitting of the BiOM ankle system in Europe last year, Pace Rehabilitation has continued to provide seven of its leg amputee patients with clinical trials of the sophisticated electronic device. Initial patient feedback has been very positive, including one below the knee amputee who commented, "It’s like having my leg back!”

Ottobock, has supported an exhibition at the House of Commons promoting access to prosthetics for disabled people. The event was hosted by Eric Ollerenshaw MP for Lancaster and Fleetwood, and attended by more than 30 Parliamentarians with support from a number of amputees including British Paralympian and Wheelchair Tennis World Team Cup silver and bronze winner, Louise Hunt.

Electrode implant aids arm control

For the first time an operation has been conducted, at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, where electrodes have been permanently implanted in nerves and muscles of an amputee to directly control an arm prosthesis. The result allows natural control of an advanced robotic prosthesis, similarly to the motions of a natural limb.
